It all began in 1975 at a small
rural dirt track in Waycross, GA. The legend Conard
Johnson was born in the street stock division where he
catapulted his Camaro to 35 feature wins in the first
two years of participation against a field of 30
competitors every Saturday night driving the number 12
machine. The early success in the street stock division
afforded Conard the opportunity to move up to the highly
competitive Late Model division in 1978. For a span of
23 years (1978-2001) he enjoyed success with nearly 170
more feature wins along with 5 track championships at
various tracks around the southeast. Conard Johnson
retired from driving in 2001, but his passion for racing
still lives on in his sons.
In 1989 the next Johnson took his
turn behind the wheel of a race car. Following in his
father’s footsteps, Scott brandished the number 12 on
the side of his fire breathing mount. Scott Johnson,
Conard’s oldest son, strapped himself into a 1972 Chevy
Chevelle and began to assert himself as a force to be
reckoned with in the street stock division. He competed
in the ranks of Street Stock and Limited Sportsman
divisions until the 1996 season when he made the jump to
the Dirt Late Model Division where he currently races.
In almost 18 years of racing, Scott amassed nearly 75
wins with many coming from Dirt Racing’s top level
division - Dirt Late Models.
Beginning in 2006 Scott began
touring with the National Late Model Series that fielded
several cars sporting the number 12. Out of respect for
the old school master, Conard Johnson, the SJI
Motorsports Team decided to pay homage and select the
number 12 with a twist. By adding the “J” to his car
behind the 12 Scott has set himself apart as his own
driver and one that understands tradition and his
induction into “Generation Next”. So the 12J was born…..
and will continue to race for years to come.
